Eicher CEO downplays Bajaj claims, says not easy to unseat Royal Enfield

Enfield enjoys almost the entire 250-350 cc motorcycle market in country Royal Enfield, well known for its bullets, said it is not going to be easy for any new entrant to unseat the company. Bajaj Auto, which entered the 350-500cc motorcycle segment in December, claimed to have overtaken   Royal Enfield   in February in volumes. “If you look at the 250 cc plus motorcycle market in India, every 19 of 20 products are sold by us…that is a reality. It is not that easy to unseat someone who is doing this,” Siddhartha Lal, managing director and chief executive officer of Eicher (which owns Enfield) told   Business Standard . Bajaj’s claim was based on one month’s performance of the Dominar, its new 373cc premium sports motorcycle. Touch, pinch, ride on Riding a   motorcycle   is about to become a little less zen. Pretty soon, it will be rare for someone astride a big cruiser to scan the unfurling ribbon of road and stoically wonder how many new Snapchat messages he has. The age of the infotainment system is imminent. This week, Polaris Industries, the company behind Indian and Victory motorcycles, unveiled a new 7-inch   touchscreen system   dubbed Ride Command that will give turn-by-turn directions, sync to smartphones, and flag the nearest gas station when the tank is low. The handlebar computer will come standard on Indian's new Chieftain and Roadmaster bikes, which account for about half the brand's sales. "We're really pumped up about this," said Steve Menneto, president of motorcycles at Polaris. "We're opening up a huge part of the market for ourselves."   (read more)

Bajaj Auto to launch bike from metal used in INS Vikrant

Indian naval ship (INS) Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier, which played a pivotal role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, has made its way into a commuter bike to be launched by Bajaj Auto next month. The Pune-based, India’s most valued two- and three-wheeler maker, will launch a 150-cc motorcycle on February 1 christened ‘V’ which is built from metal used in the country’s most celebrated aircraft carrier. This will be the eight product by Bajaj Auto this financial year and the first in 2016. ‘V’ is a new brand by the company complementing five of its predecessors in production. This new bike, which has a slight retro look as seen in the sneak preview aired today by Bajaj, is expected to be positioned between the Pulsar and Discover.
