Ola shuts down TaxiForSure business; lays off 700 employees

Image
Ola shuts down TaxiForSure business; lays off 700 employees India’s largest taxi aggregator, Ola, has shut down its   TaxiForSure   (TFS) business and has laid off 700 employees in the process, as it looks to consolidate its presence and reduce   cash burn   to fend off an attack from Uber. Ola   had acquired smaller rival TFS in March 2015 for $200 million to help it maintain market leadership against Uber. Nougat for Android, nought for Indians

Image
Nougat for Android, nought for Indians Google   has finally let us know what the ‘N’ in  Android  N stands for. And this time they decided to crowdsource the name. And no, it’s not  Neyyappam  or Nankhatai. The ‘N’ in Android stands for Nougat, that chewy, sticky dessert. Nougat  is a sweet made from sugar or honey, nuts, and egg white. Now, nougat isn’t as mainstream as say KitKat or Ice Cream Sandwich or Marshmallow, but it does have its fans. I have an old relationship with it. As a kid, I would pop into my mouth the moment I didn’t want to answer inane questions such as “Do you like your teacher?” or “Recite a poem for us”. While such nougats are long gone, the closest one can have over the counter is a Snickers bar. But Google chose Nougat over Neyyappam, the deep-fried concoction from God’s Own Country. This despite the fact that we’ve had reports that among the names being considered were  Nankhatai  and Neyyappam, and that Neyy...

Image
Google CEO Sundar Pichai  has said he believes India will become a bigger market for the company than the United States sometime in the middle of 2016. In an interaction with half a dozen journalists in New Delhi on Wednesday, Pichai said it was not just with regard to the use of Android-based phone devices that India would scale ahead of the US; there also were many areas of technological development where India will become its first market for experimentation and trial before launch in other markets of the world. “We developed the offline version of YouTube in India, tried it here and are now taking that to other countries,” Pichai said in what was his first media address after taking over as Google CEO in August this year. Pichai, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur who joined Google in April 2004 within days of the company launching Gmail said it was an emotional experience for him to come to India and launch these initiatives in this country. Elaborating on the Google Loon proje...
