16 nanosatellites made by the US placed into the sun-synchronous orbit of the Earth India on Friday launched a polar rocket with 31 satellites, including three Indian and 28 of six other nations from its spaceport in Sriharikota. The 44.4-metre tall Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C40) roared into a clear sky after a perfect lift-off at 9.29 a.m. after a 28-hour countdown. The 320-tonne rocket will eject the satellites one-by-one and deploy them into the earth's lower orbit about 17 minutes and 18 seconds after the lift-off. Isro Chairman designate K Sivan says PSLVC40 is special for Isro since it is coming after a failure 4.5 months back. Current Affairs   : The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is gearing up to launch its Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation along with 30 co-passenger satellites. Isro's workhorse, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), in its 40th flight (PSLV-C38), will carry these satellites into orbit. The rocket is scheduled to take off from the Sriharikota space port near Chennai at 9.29 am on Friday. India's first private rocket set for launch in 2020

Image
India's first private rocket set for launch in 2020 The first  private rocket  built by a consortium of private firms in the country is set for launch by 2020. If successful, this would increase capacity to hurl smallsatellites into space, meeting both local demand and serving global customers such as OneWeb. Till now, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) was the only manufacturer of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). In the two decades since its debut launch, PSLVs have done 35 flights, hurling 86 satellites - including 45 foreign, small and medium  satellites  - into space. Isro built this rocket by integrating components and systems made by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Larsen & Toubro, Godrej Aerospace, Avasarala Technologies and Walchandnagar Industries. However,  Isro  has been able to scale up production only up to a limit - it has the capacity to launch six PSLVs a year, compared to two a few years earlier. In the...
