Maharashtra bandh: Security beefed up, schools and colleges remain open

Addressing the media, a leader of the Sakal Maratha Samaj, Amol Jadhavrao said that the state-wide bandh would be observed in a peaceful manner from 8 am to 6 pm. However, the bandh will not be observed in the Navi Mumbai. "We have called for a state-wide bandh on August 9. The bandh will not be observed in Navi Mumbai, due to some sensitive issue. Essential services, schools and colleges have been excluded from the bandh called by us," Jadhavrao said. He also urged the community members to not commit suicide over the issue and maintain their calm. Bhansali has been facing the ire of various groups and self-styled experts on what they term as 'erroneous' depiction of Rajput queen Rani Padmavati. The Shri Rajput Karni Sena on Wednesday called for a 'Bharat Bandh' (shutdown) on December 1 if Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie "Padmavati" releases on that date, while the Maharashtra government provided a precautionary security cover for the filmmaker in view of the increasing controversies and growing threats. "We will hold rallies across the country, including Gurugram, Patna, Lucknow and Bhopal before the release date," Lokendra Singh Kalvi, founder-patron of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, an organisation of the Rajput community, told media persons in Jaipur. Went to Latur for a statewide campaign to reach out to farmers; chopper developed a technical snag Breaking News   : Maharashtra Chief Minister   Devendra Fadnavis ' helicopter crash landed at Nilanga in Latur district on Wednesday after it suffered a snag, but he escaped unhurt. "Our helicopter did meet with an accident in Latur but me and my team is absolutely safe and ok. Nothing to worry," Fadnavis tweeted after the mishap. A senior official of the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) said it was an accident and the chopper suffered substantial damage. Fadnavis had gone to Latur in Marathwada for the BJP's 'Shivar Samwad Sabha', a statewide campaign to reach out to farmers. "I am safe. There was a minor accident involving the helicopter. Shift all IPL matches out of Maharashtra after Apr 30, Bombay HC tells BCCI

The   Bombay High Court   on Wednesday ordered that all Indian Premier League (IPL) matches scheduled in Maharashtra after April 30 be shifted elsewhere in view of the severe drought in the state. This gives the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) 18 days to look for new venues for 13 matches in May, including the final in Mumbai on May 29. The order came despite an assurance by the BCCI that IPL franchises of Mumbai and Pune had agreed to contribute Rs 5 crore to the chief minister’s drought relief fund. The court said: “We agree that merely shifting of IPL matches out of the state will not be a solution but this can be a beginning to address the drought situation in Maharashtra. Several people are dying because of water scarcity in the state. This court cannot ignore the plight of such people.” Sources close to both the Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants said the team promoters were now waiting to sit with the BCCI to chart the way forward. “...

Maharashtra expecting Rs 4.6 lakh cr investment during Make in India week

Maharashtra   expects an  investment   of Rs 4.6 lakh crore across sectors like ports, industries and  textiles  during the Make in  India  week starting on February 13. The summit will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra  Modi. The state government will set up a separate pavilion to showcase Magnetic Maharashtra, where meetings will be held with investors. Rajasthan witnesses solar bids spiraling down to Rs 4.34 a unit

In the bidding for solar projects totalling 420 MW in Rajasthan under the National Solar Mission, the winning bid touched a new low of Rs 4.34 per unit, entered by Finnish solar power company Fortum Energy for a 70 Mw project. However, lowering of benchmark tariff by the central government did not go too well in Maharashtra which saw subdued interest from the companies participating in bidding for 500 MW in the state Rajasthan saw a spurt of foreign companies lining up for solar projects. American company Rising Sun Energy quoted Rs 4.35 per unit for two projects with total capacity of 140 MW. African major SolaireDirect has quoted same tariff for same capacity projects. Among the domestic ones, India Bulls through its subsidiary Yarrow Infra won 70 MW by quoting Rs 4.36 per unit.  Read Articles

Iconic Marathi poet Mangesh Padgaonkar passes away

Iconic Marathi poet and  Padma Bhushan  recipient Mangesh Keshav Padgaonkar passed away here today after a brief illness. He was 86. Born on March 10, 1929 in Vengurla, Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra, he received a Master of Arts degree in Marathi and Sanskrit from the University of Bombay. He taught Marathi at Ruia College for some years, and then during the 1970-1990 period served as an editor at the US Information Service, both in Mumbai. Along with poets Vinda Karandikar and Vasant Bapat, Padgaonkar was part of many poetry recitation programmes that were held in Maharashtra in 1960s and 1970s. He has also written lyrics of many Marathi film songs. Sung by Arun Date, his songs “Ya Janmawar, Ya Jaganyawar Shatada Prem Karawe”, “Bhatukalichya Khelamadhali” and “Shukratara Mand Wara” are well known. Maharashtra govt to challenge Salman Khan's hit-and-run case acquittal in SC

The Maharashtra government today told the Bombay High Court that it will file an appeal in the Supreme Courtagainst actor  Salman Khan ’s acquittal in the 2002 hit-and-run case.  The state government told the High Court that it will file a special leave petition in the apex court, The Hindureported.  The High Court had, on December 10, acquitted the actor of all charges in the case, in which one person sleeping on the pavement had been killed and four others injured.  “Prosecution has failed to prove any charges against Salman Khan,” the court had observed. It had also said that the prosecution had failed to prove that the actor had consumed alcohol and was driving his Toyota Land Cruiser when the mishap took place.
