India seeks $500-bn BRICS trade by 2020

Image
Leaders of the five economies agree to work on credit rating agency, trade in local currency and cooperation on tax evasion While a key agreement on setting up a   BRICS   credit rating agency eluded them, leaders of the five emerging large economies ended their eighth summit with a commitment to strive for greater synergy and higher economic growth. With Indian and Chinese exports to the West shrinking, Prime Minister   Narendra Modi called for doubling of intra-BRICS trade to $500 billion by 2020. This was seen as a key to spur growth in BRICS economies, two of which have recorded negative growth. Chinese President Xi Jinping drew attention to “some countries getting more inward looking in their policies… Protectionism is rising and the forces against globalisation are an emerging risk,” he said. The ‘Goa Declaration’, issued at the end of the summit, welcomed “experts exploring the possibility of setting up an independent BRICS Rating Agency based on market...

UK government needs stronger response to VW emissions scandal: Committee

Image
UK government needs stronger response to VW emissions scandal: Committee The British government should take a tougher stance against   Volkswagen   (VW) after its emissions fraud, as well as increase the use of electric cars and reduce air pollution from transport, a parliamentary environment committee said on Thursday. Almost a year after US regulators found that VW had cheated in diesel emissions tests, the British government has yet to decide what action to take against Europe's largest automaker, even though it faces criminal investigations in the United States, South Korea and elsewhere. The worldwide scandal, dubbed "Dieselgate", has hurt VW's reputation and business, and already cost it billions of dollars. VW last September admitted to using a sophisticated secret software in cars to cheat on exhaust emissions tests. The Environmental Audit Committee, whose conclusions are not binding on the government, said VW had only just started to recall cars ...

David Cameron to resign today, Theresa May to become UK PM

Image
David Cameron to resign today, Theresa May to become UK PM David Cameron   will resign today and Britain will get its first female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher, as British Home Secretary   Theresa May   will take over the post. After failing to convince UK to remain in the European Union in a shocking referendum, Cameron had announced in June that he would step down by October, May's only remaining rival to replace Cameron -- Energy Minister   Andrea Leadsom   -- pulled out of the race following controversy over comments she made about motherhood and leadership. "Obviously, with these changes, we now don't need to have a prolonged period of transition. And so tomorrow I will chair my last cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for prime minister's questions. And then after that I expect to go to the palace and offer my resignation. So we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening...

ISIS developing Google-style driverless cars for attacks

Image
Islamic State (ISIS) technicians are working to develop a   Google-style driverless car   that could navigate itself into a crowded area before detonating an explosive device, aNATO security expert has warned. ISIS' research and development department in the terror group's de facto Syrian capital, Raqqa, is believed to be producing the vehicles at the same time as US Internet giant Google attempts to perfect the same technology. If successful, the invention could prove to be a major headache for security services in Britain and throughoutEurope and North America, where self-driving cars are expected to become commonplace, Daily Express reported. Thousands of driverless cars are expected to be on Britain's roads within the next few years and there is a very real prospect jihadis could prey on the new technology to launch attacks in the UK. Jamie Shea, NATO's deputy assistant secretary general for emerging security threats, said the Islamic extremists were u...

New contagious form of cancer discovered

Image
Contagious cancers  may not be as rare as thought, say scientists who have discovered a second transmissible cancer in Tasmanian devils - small dog-sized ferocious carnivores found in the Australian island state of Tasmania. Transmissible cancers - cancers which can spread between individuals by the transfer of living cancer cells - are believed to arise extremely rarely in nature. One of the few known transmissible cancers causes facial tumours in Tasmanian devils, and is threatening this species with extinction. The discovery by researchers from the University of Tasmania in Australia, and the University of Cambridge in UK, calls into question our current understanding of the processes that drive cancers to become transmissible. Tasmanian devils are iconic marsupial carnivores that are only found in the wild in Tasmania. The size of a small dog, the animals have a reputation for ferocity as they frequently bite each other during mating and feeding interactions.  ...
